High levels of bilirubin - usually above 20 mg - can cause deafness, cerebral palsy or brain damage in some babies. In rare cases, jaundice indicate the presence of hepatitis. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children jaundice should be examined within a few days after birth.
When my daughter was born, is the level increased to 17 by the third day and almost had to stay in the hospital receiving phototherapy treatment. We have not been discharged from the hospital until my daughter 3 1 / 2 days old. I had a blood sample to determine the respective bili wait a few days later. Fortunately, the values were in decline.
